LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) — A three-car crash from over the weekend in Lakeway has claimed another life. Juan Cortez, from Midland, had been on life support since the deadly wreck, but medical examiner officials say the 27-year-old has died. He was a passenger in the car with 26-year-old Cristina Rincon Mendoza, who died in the crash when Nicholas Stearns, 27, crashed into her car. Mendoza was also from Midland.
The wreck stemmed from a chase by Travis County Sheriff’s officials. TCSO spokesman Roger Wade says deputies began following Stearns’ car after it blew through a red light at the intersection at South FM 620 and RM 2222. Stearns, from Bartonville, Ill., died in the wreck that followed.
Wade said Stearns continued to speed away from deputies, despite them having their lights and sirens on. Police say Stearns drove erratically between lanes. Deputies say his car eventually drove into traffic near Murfin Road and crashed head-on with another car — the one Mendoza and Cortez were in.
DPS officials say Mendoza was killed when Stearns crashed into her car. Police say Mendoza’s car rolled onto its roof and was hit by yet another car. A helicopter lifted Cortez to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he later died.
Meanwhile, the 51-year-old driver of the third car, an Austin man, was treated at the scene and released.
