Police arrested Ghamal Webb, 38, in connection to Thompson’s death. According to police, Webb and Thompson were both living at the group home but they had separate rooms.

Initial information indicates Webb and Thompson got into an argument which escalated when Thompson came into Webb’s room and started assaulting him. According to police, Webb was able to subdue Thompson by choking him.

“It’s a surprise to me, I just know he’s not a killer, he’s not that kind of dude,” said Michael Carter who met Webb 15 years ago. He said Webb is a DJ and they have worked together on shows.

“He’s a great guy, I just hope the best for him and I’m going to rally for him as much as I can,” said Carter, adding he has never witnessed his friend fight.

Austin Police said Webb and Thompson were placed in the home by Caritas of Austin, a nonprofit which helps people in need find affordable housing.
