Equality group applauds Planet Fitness for transgender support

MIDLAND, Mich. (MEDIA GENERAL) – Equality Michigan is applauding Planet Fitness for standing by its “no judgment zone” policy and revoking a woman’s membership when she complained about a transgender person using the woman’s locker room.

Yvette Cormier, who was a member at the Midland location, told WNEM out of Saginaw she complained after a man walked into the woman’s locker room while she was changing. That person was actually a transgender woman.

When Cormier took her complaint to corporate, they responded by revoking her membership for violating the company’s “no judgment zone” policy.

Planet Fitness said Cormier acted inappropriately in expressing her concerns about the policy regarding gender identity because she complained to other gym members.

“Too often, gender variant and transgender people are mistreated based on their gender identity, and it is too rare that we get to thank a business for being a positive leader for change,” said Yvonne Siferd, Director of Victim Services for Equality Michigan. “The reality is that the only solution that would have appeased the complaining customer was to throw out the person who made her uncomfortable.”

Equality Michigan set up an online card people can sign to thank Planet Fitness.
