AUSTIN (KXAN) — Colton Turner’s mother, Meagan Work, recently gave birth to a boy while in custody, a Child Protective Services spokesperson said. The newborn was placed into foster care Feb. 13, and a family court judge will ultimately decide who will care for the child.
Colton Turner’s body was found in a shallow grave last September in South Austin. Work and her boyfriend, Michael Brandt Turner, are both in jail charged with injury to a child in the 2-year-old’s death and have been behind bars since his body was discovered.
Paperwork filed by CPS the judge to terminate the relationship between the mother and her new child. The petition presumes Turner is the father of the baby.
“In order to protect this child from undue duress surrounding this tragedy, we decline all requests for comment,” Raquel Helfrich and Liz St.Clair said in a statement. Helfrich is Colton’s great aunt, and is among those pushing for Colton’s Law. “Please understand that Colton’s Law (HB 2053) will save and protect thousands of children per year in Texas from suffering the same fate as Colton. That is our main focus. Please respect our privacy and our wishes to help us bring awareness to a law that could help end the suffering of the most vulnerable children in our state.”
In the wake of the boy’s death, three CPS workers were fired. A state investigation found a CPS program director, supervisor and child welfare investigator failed to follow CPS handbook policies. Those allegations were ‘substantiated’ this month in a report released by the Health and Human Services Commission.
