Austin couple celebrates 75 years of marriage

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A special Austin couple celebrated three-quarters of a century together this weekend. Myrtle and John Brown’s family hosted a party to commemorate the milestone.

Myrtle, 96, and John, 94, are still active and take care of themselves. There are the ups and the downs in 75 years, but Myrtle says her advice to younger couples is to trust the Lord and — if you say “death do you part, that’s what you should do.”

“I can tell you It’s still wonderful to be together. Still wonderful,” Myrtle said. “We’re kind of both in the same boat. We’re still kind of crippled, but we’re stayin’ in there and we’re doing okay.”

You’d think with such a long-lasting marriage, they planned out the wedding for a while. Nope. The couple decided one morning 75 years ago they belonged with each other, so they went to the courthouse and got married on the spot. Myrtle says it doesn’t have to be fancy — just real. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
