Boys missing in Red Rock found after nearly 12 hours in cold weather

RED ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Four young boys are back home after they went missing for nearly 12 hours in the cold Friday night, prompting multiple search crews to look for them.

The boys, aged 8 to 9 years old, were reported missing to the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office around 7:15 p.m. Friday. The boys were playing in a wooded area near the 400 block of Red Rock Ranch Road and had not been seen since 5 p.m.

They were said to have only been wearing thin jackets as temperatures plummeted below freezing.

Deputies requested assistance from the DPS helicopter in Houston, Texas Parks & Wildlife, local volunteer fire departments, Texas Search & Rescue and the Travis County K-9 unit.

Around 3 a.m. Saturday, one of the boys called 911 from a cell phone no longer in service. Search teams tracked the phone and instructed the boys to stay put. They were found within three quarters of a mile from their homes.

“At that point you start pulling off what you have and start giving to the kids.. gloves, coats, blankets, whatever you have with you, it goes to the kids,” said Bo Wingo with Texas Search and Rescue. “And your goal at that point is to get them hiked out as quickly as possible.”

Each boy was evaluated by EMS and found to have no injuries. They were then released to their parents.
