AUSTIN (KXAN) — Nearly five dozen homes in the Dove Springs area in South Austin will be bought out with new federal money approved by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

On Tuesday, Congressman Lloyd Doggett said he helped secure an additional $21.4 million in funds for the buyouts. This will allow the City of Austin to buy out most of the 59 homes remaining in the Army Corps Project area. The Army Corps plans to use part of the funding to restore the creek and create recreational space for residents.

“This funding will help move more families out of harm’s way,” said Doggett. “I’m also pleased that we will begin work to transform an area that has seen so much heartbreak into a park that our entire community can enjoy.”

The City of Austin and Travis County have used a combination of local and federal funds to buy more than 450 homes in the Onion Creek floodplain since 2000. The 2013 flood, which devastated many homes in the area, underscored the significance of completing the project as soon as possible.
