Mariachi bands compete for high school state title

AUSTIN (KXAN) — High school students from around the state take part in University Interscholastic League competitions, including mariachi.

The Lehman High School Lobos will be heading to San Antonio next weekend to compete in the UIL competition for mariachi. They are one of 12 high school mariachi bands who advanced to state. Members of the band started playing in the program as early as middle school.

One student, Emily Gonzalez, says she transferred high schools just so she could join the mariachi program.

The students say they feel confident, but it isn’t all about winning.

“Entertaining people,” said senior Benito Garcia. “Having the smiles, you know? It’s a real good feeling.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
