LA Fitness customers paid for gyms still not open

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Customers who paid up-front to use a pair of LA Fitness locations are now questioning why the gyms have not yet opened, and what will happen to the money they already spent.

LA Fitness is opening 10 locations in the Austin area over the next two years, and gyms on South Lamar and Anderson Lane were supposed to be open by last December. They remain unopened, and the only location open for business is in Round Rock.

“They told me it would be open mid-November,” Erica Worthy said of the North Austin location. “I did just like the basic intro, month by month, and I paid about $90 up front.”

She expected to be putting that $90 to good use by now. Construction started last July but the gym still isn’t open and Worthy can’t get a reason why.

“I feel like my biggest frustration is nobody’s heard from the company,” she said. “An update would be appreciated.”

Many customers feel the same way. They’ve been writing on the gym’s Facebook page which hasn’t been updated since December.

“Is anyone from LA Fitness going to respond to our questions about an opening date?” one customer asked. “I joined in July and was told the facility would be open in 60 days!!”

Austin Messenger says he signed up for a membership at the South Austin location in August. “I thought that was a remote possibility to begin with.”

At the site’s sales center, a sign on window reads “Opening mid-December.” Messenger came back Thursday to check on the status. He recently canceled his gym membership at another business.

“I think I canceled it in January thinking they have to be close, because they’ve moved equipment in.”

Close, maybe, but still not open. Some say they have waited long enough and it may be time to find another gym.

Several calls and emails made by KXAN to LA Fitness since Monday have not been returned.

Some employees said if you signed up for one of the pre-sales, you can go to the LA Fitness in Round Rock or cancel your contract and get your money back.

before signing up for a gym membership, the Better Business Bureau says to read through any contract thoroughly and look it up on the BBB website to see if they have a history of complaints. They also say not to give into sales pressure.

Gyms currently under construction are on South Lamar Boulevard, Anderson Lane, Slaughter Lane and Parmer Lane. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
