DALLAS (AP) — A 14-year-old girl was charged with capital murder Monday in the death of an infant found dead inside a Dallas apartment, police said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the teenager drowned 3-month-old Justice Hull shortly after the teen’s mother, who was caring for the baby, went to work Monday, Dallas police Maj. Robert Sherwin said in a news release. Officers went to the apartment and found the infant’s body inside after the teen allegedly called the Police Department around 6 a.m., he said.
Authorities say the suspect and the baby were not related. The infant had been placed in the home by Child Protective Services at the request of the child’s biological mother who is in jail, Sherwin said.
Other children in the home were taken to the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, police said.
The names of the teenage suspect, her mother and the biological mother of the infant were not immediately released.
Neighbors told The Dallas Morning News that the girl in custody has a twin sister and a teenage brother. The twins were often seen walking a dog outside together, neighbors said. The girls played basketball in middle school.
“They always together. You never see one without the other,” neighbor Kaleisha Taylor said.
Sherwin said the 14-year-old suspect, who is charged with capital murder of a person under the age of 10, would be transferred to a juvenile detention center.
