AUSTIN (KXAN ) — It’s finally official, Dr. Paul Cruz is now in charge of the largest school district in Central Texas. On Monday night, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved the final contract for the new superintendent.
After a round of applause from board members and people in the board room, Cruz said “I am just so honored and humbled by this opportunity, I truly am. I love this district, I love Austin ISD.”
When Dr. Meria Carstarphen left in April to take a position as superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, Dr. Paul Cruz stepped in to serve as interim superintendent. Filling in during the interim allowed Cruz to build a rapport with everyone on the board.
“I do see it as a new day,” said Cruz. “Just working with our board members for the past nine months and even currently with our new board members, there’s just this renewed energy, there is just so much focus on student learning for all youngsters.”
Cruz will be taking over a district with 85,000 students. And for him, it’s all about the students.
“Everyone has to feel like they’re part of the family,” said Cruz. “That somebody cares about them and that they’re going to learn and excel. I do see us continuing to work to make sure all of our youngsters are ready for college, career and life.”
