NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) — A 4-year-old girl has died after a dead pine tree fell on her in an accident during some burning in rural East Texas.

The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office on Monday didn’t immediately release the victim’s name.

Deputies on Sunday afternoon responded to a call about a tree falling on a child. Authorities arrived to find the girl’s father attempting to revive her. Emergency responders took over as the girl was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where she died.

The sheriff’s department says some of the girl’s relatives were burning around several dead pine trees. The blaze spread beyond a fire line and one of the family members went outside to contain the fire.

The girl followed the adult outside and was struck when a pine tree unexpectedly fell.
