SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A San Antonio man is dead, killed in a freak car crash in San Marcos. Police say two men pulled over on the Interstate 35 ramp just north of Highway 123 just before 6 a.m. Monday. They were trying to move a toolbox that had fallen off the truck in front of them.
Police say a truck pulling a flatbed trailer was heading north on I-35 when a large, wooden toolbox fell off of the trailer — landing in the road. Martin Valdiva, 54, was driving behind the truck and trailer — his 20-year-old son, Martin Valdiva Jr., a passenger. Valdiva stopped on the right shoulder, and he and his son got out of their truck to get the box out of the road.
As they were moving it, a Chevrolet Tahoe swerved to miss the toolbox in the road and ran into both men on the shoulder instead. Valdiva Jr. died at the scene, and his father was taken to Central Texas Medical Center.
Police say the driver who hit them is cooperating in the investigation.
