AUSTIN (KXAN) — A wreck early Thursday morning killed one driver and sent another to jail. Police responded to the crash at Berkman Drive and Cloverleaf Drive at 1:40 a.m. Officers say the driver of a black Chevrolet Avalanche headed eastbound on Cloverleaf Drive ran a stop sign and crashed into a green Pontiac heading north on Berkman Drive. The force of the crash launched both cars up into the yard of a home, where they smashed into a cinder block fence.

The Pontiac driver died at the scene. Police have not yet released details about that person. Officers arrested the driver of the truck on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. There were no passengers in either car.

Sgt. Dustin Lee with APD’s Highway Enforcement said charges against the truck driver could range from misdemeanor DWI to intoxication manslaughter, if they determine intoxication was the leading cause of the crash.

Officers closed off Berkman Drive at that intersection while Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence.
