Crime fighting pooch recognized by Austin Police

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is honoring a neighborhood crime fighter today, but unlike other honorees, this one has four legs.

Police say Asia deterred two burglary attempts and put four suspects in jail around Thanksgiving.

In one of the incidents, burglars were trying to get into the house while her owners, Mary and Christina, were sleeping. Asia heard the burglars and started barking and stood guard at their bedroom door. Mary called 911 and opened the back door to let the dog out. Asia chased the suspects, who were up on the roof, and held them at bay until police caught them.

The second incident happened a few days later. Mary was outside smoking and heard Asia barking — she noticed that someone was trying to break into her neighbor’s house. They were able to get the license plate from the vehicle.

APD Region Four District Representatives will give Asia an award at tonight’s Commander’s Forum. That meeting runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clinton Hunter South Substation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
