AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police identified the person killed trying to cross Interstate 35 last week as 12-year-old Ashanti Taliah Williams.

Police say she was trying to cross the freeway Jan. 7 near Parmer Lane when a truck heading south hit her. Williams died at the scene. It was not clear why she was on the interstate.

Police asked for help last week from the public to identify the girl after they could not match her to any missing persons cases. Police did not say how they were able to identify the girl.

Southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about three hours as police investigated the crash.
