FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (NBC/WTVJ) — A Florida police officer is alive today, thanks to a quick-thinking suspect. It happened in September as the 17-year-old was handcuffed and sitting in the Fort Lauderdale police booking facility.
Suddenly, the officer in the room collapsed. Seeing the officer in distress, the teen got up and began kicking the security fence and yelling to officers. Other officers arrive and start administering first aid. The 49-year-old officer survived the ordeal.
The suspect, who will be honored later this month, has been arrested several times since the September incident.
