AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Water Utility crews spent most of Wednesday working to shut off a 6-inch water main that broke near Lamar Boulevard and 51st Street. The pipe supplies water to quite a few customers in the area.
AWU spokesman Jason Hill says the main requires a three-valve shut-off, which crews had to pinpoint. The main broke in the early morning hours, and final repairs weren’t finished until Wednesday afternoon.
AWU crews have been busy working on water main breaks throughout the past week, tending to one on Thursday that gushed for 2 ½ hours before crews could shut it off in Northeast Austin. Still, Hill says that overall this is still in line with the normal amount of breaks they see in aging infrastructure – which amounts to about 10 per day. Hill says their main concern is just to hustle out there quickly when the temperatures drop near freezing so that they don’t create ice problems.
