LA GRANGE, Texas (KXAN) — A traffic stop Tuesday along Interstate 10 turned up more than 100 pounds of marijuana, Fayette County Sheriff’s officials said.
Officers pulled over 41-year-old Hugo Cesar Garcia about 10:30 a.m. for a traffic violation. Garcia reportedly allowed police and a K-9 to search his truck after the deputy suspected the vehicle was being used to transport drugs.
During the search, authorities said they found 36 bundles of marijuana in the gas tank.
Garcia, from Edinburg, was charged with possession of marijuana.
Despite being hundreds of miles away from the border, Fayette County sees a lot of human smuggling and drug trafficking. KXAN was along for the ride last May during a stop along I-10. An SUV led police on a chase before running off the side of the road. As the vehicle rolled to a stop, nine people bolted from the SUV. The driver was a formerly deported felon, and his passengers said they paid him $4,000 each to be transported out of Mexico into the United States.
