Community Tax Centers ramp up for busy season

AUSTIN (KXAN) — IRS-filing season gets underway a week from Tuesday. This year, everyone will have to report proof of health insurance on their tax return. The Community Tax Centers expect it to be a busy season, and they’re ready to help.

They’re opening up their doors Tuesday morning to help low-income families understand this new requirement. You can call United Way’s 211 for information on locations near you, as well as hours of operation.

As you prepare your taxes from 2014, remember: a lot of the time, you can deduct your state sales taxes on your federal income tax. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is supporting a bill to make that sales tax deduction permanent.

The Texas Republican says the sales tax deduction is a matter of “fairness,” since people from other states can claim their state income taxes. Cornyn’s office estimates the sales tax deduction saves Texans about $1 billion each year. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
