AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Texas lawmaker from Hays County hopes to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.

“I was shocked to learn that the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors is not currently illegal in the State of Texas, and I think a lot of people may be unaware of this issue as well,” said Rep. Jason Isaac from Dripping Springs. “This isn’t just a device for kids to use nicotine but also other controlled substances.”

The Republican lawmaker said a group of high school students from Kyle brought the issue to his attention after they noticed e-cigs being used on their campuses. The city of Kyle adopted its own ban for minors in June 2014.

“Currently, a 10-year-old can walk into a store and legally buy a device that contains some of the same harmful chemicals as a regular cigarette.”

Isaac says the electronic cigarettes contain some of the same chemicals found in a regular cigarette, including nicotine.

This is just one of a thousand bills filed before the legislature returns tomorrow.
