Spooked pets fill shelters following New Year’s

BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) — While you were enjoying the fireworks this New Year’s, your pets likely were not. Local animal shelters are flooded with pets that got spooked and ran away during the fireworks.

Officials at Bastrop County Animal Shelter are about 10 percent over their capacity of 84 animals. The shelter says you should always bring your pets inside to make sure they don’t run away as fireworks go off.

“Put your pet inside even they’re not normally a house dog,” said Amanda Smith with the Bastrop County Animal Shelter. “Bring them in, give them a chew bone and keep them safe and comfortable… then your dog will still be there on January 2nd and you won’t have to worry about it.”

The folks at the shelter said they also tend to see a big spike of runaway pets around Independence Day.
