AUSTIN (KXAN) — Tight ends coach Bruce Chambers and wide receivers coach Les Koenning were fired Wednesday, head coach Charlie Strong said.

“Les and Bruce are both good men and good football coaches,” Strong said. “It’s unfortunate that it didn’t work out, but I just feel like we need to make a change and head in a different direction in their positions. We wish them the best.”

Chambers was the one assistant coach from Mack Brown’s staff that was retained by Strong. He’s been an assistant at Texas dating back to 1998 and took over coaching the tight ends in 2003. You would have to go back to Jermichael Finley in 2007 for the last Longhorns tight end to have more than 16 catches in a season.

Koenning played wide receiver at Texas and Strong hired him away from Mississippi State, where he was the offensive coordinator. His replacement will inherit a group that loses 70 percent of its production with the graduation of John Harris and Jaxon Shipley.
