LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — Leander High School was placed on lockdown for three hours Wednesday as a precaution after rumors of a possible weapon on campus, according to district spokeswoman Veronica Sopher. No weapon was found on campus.
Sopher told KXAN, “When we don’t have a lot of details, a lot of factual information you have to take a full approach.”
Police were called in to search the campus room by room as school officials sent out an email to parents to let them know about the situation
Leander Police Lt. Billy Fletcher tells KXAN a student went into the bathroom where thought he saw another student with an item tucked into the small of his back. Fletcher says it’s unknown if it was a weapon or not.
Fletcher says, “What we did is we locked down the school after the school was put on lockdown procedures. Once that was secure we went classroom to classroom to make sure kids are safe.”
Lisa Haley’s 16-year-old daughter was inside Leander High School when her teacher was told to keep students in the classroom and lock the door.
Haley says, “The message I got was guy with a gun in the high school and I just flew. I’m just scared…I’m scared. The not knowing…do they have a weapon, do they not..are they going to shoot? I don’t know what’s going on.”
15 year old Kaila Kattner was in her child development class.
Kattner says, “It came over the intercom saying we had to have a lockdown. Everyone thought it was just a drill at first but then my teacher got an email saying it wasn’t a drill.”
But it ended up as a false alarm and students like Kaila are just happy to be safe.
Two teams of officers searched classroom by classroom to make sure there is not a weapon in the school.
Since notification of the lockdown, a few parents have shown up to the school. While entrances to the school parking lot are closed, there are no significant road closures. Traffic is flowing as usual on Baghdad Road, which is the street in front of the school.
Email sent out to parents
In an abundance of caution, we have locked down Leander High School after receiving a report of possible weapon on campus.
The Police are involved and are investigating the situation, and will keep you informed.
We take every report seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety and security of students and staff members.”
Students were taking final exams when the lockdown was announced.
