Council candidate concedes after narrow defeat

UPDATE: Ellen Troxclair told KXAN that Ed Scruggs called her Wednesday night to concede in the race for the District 8 council spot.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin voters elected a new mayor and the remaining 10 city council members Wednesday in a runoff election. But in one race, a candidate is still fighting for the seat.

Ellen Troxclair and Ed Scruggs were in the runoff for District 8 in Southwest Austin. Troxclair won by only 57 votes and Scruggs has yet to concede.

District 8 was one of seven city council races that went to a runoff after November’s election. Some races were tighter than others, but other than District 8, the unofficial election results from last night are telling of a winner.

The Travis County Clerk’s Office says they still have to wait for military and overseas ballots to come in the mail; the deadline for those is Monday. The ‘ballot board’ will then meet to come up with official results to turn over. Those should be finalized Dec. 24.

Scruggs could still challenge the vote count in District 8 after the official numbers are tallied.
