Blue Santa lands $50,000 donation

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A donation will help make this Christmas a little brighter and help police out at the same time.

Robert Smith presented a $50,000 check to Austin’s Operation Blue Santa, the program run by the Austin Police Department that delivers toys to kids in need.

Smith said he wanted to help out a police charity because of recent protests over officer-involved deaths. He says Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo has done a good job of creating an “environment of trust”.

“Frankly there’s a lack of understanding in the community and a lack of understanding in the police force for what’s happening in the community. The only way that understanding will get you trust is if you spend more time with each other,” Smith said.

Smith has donated in the past, typically toys or bicycles, but decided to make the big donation instead this year.
