ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — A manager-on-duty at a Round Rock hotel has been charged with stealing a hotel safe with more than $29,000 and two guns inside.
The owners of the Days Inn near Interstate 35 and Hesters Crossing said the safe was inside a private office and went missing during a 24-minute span Wednesday when they were gone and 31-year-old Yadira Isabel Renovato was serving as manager. Renovato called the owners later in the day saying she needed to go to Mexico for a funeral and did not know when she would be coming back to work, the arrest affidavit said.
Police showed up Thursday at Renovato’s home and she allowed them to come inside. Officers said they found a pair of bank bags underneath her daughter’s mattress which contained bank paperwork and a personal check from the Charlie Daniels Band, the document said. The hotel owners told police the items all came from the safe.
Renovato said she found the bags on the ground just outside the hotel’s front door at the end of her shift at 3 p.m. The owners said the safe went missing sometime between 2:19 and 2:43 p.m. Instead of bringing the bank bags back into the hotel, Renovato told officers she took them home for safekeeping, the affidavit said. Police did not find the cash or handguns at her home.
She has been charged with theft and was booked into the Williamson County Jail on $30,000 bond.
