Man charged with breaking into downtown cathedral

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man has been charged with breaking into a downtown cathedral last month and stealing about $2,000 worth of jewelry from a display case.

Police said they were questioning 48-year-old Gregory Whetstone about a separate burglary when he confessed to breaking into St. Mary’s Cathedral on Nov. 16, according to an arrest affidavit.

Surveillance video showed two men using a ladder to break into the gift shop at the cathedral early that morning. Police said the physical appearance of one of the men matched Whetstone.

Officials at the cathedral say the burglars also broke a statue of the Virgin Mary that dates back to the church’s founding in the 1800s.

Whetstone is charged with burglary of a building, a state jail felony. He was booked into the Travis County Jail on $10,000 bond. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
