Downtown Lampasas evacuation lifted following leak

LAMPASAS, Texas (KXAN) — Downtown Lampasas was evacuated Saturday afternoon due to an ammonia leak at a food processing plant.

First responders were called to the leak at Windsor Foods on E. 3rd Street shortly before 2 p.m. Plant employees were evacuated immediately.The downtown area – from Hackberry Street west to Western Street and E. 2nd south to E. 4th Street – was also evacuated.

Crews isolated the leak by about 3 p.m. and residents were able to re-enter downtown shortly after 4 p.m.

The hazardous materials team remained on-scene to monitor air quality in the area. The Carol of Lights and lighted Christmas parade will go on as normal Saturday night.

Lampasas officials say the haz mat team trains regularly with Windsor Foods in case of an incident like this. The plant uses ammonia for cooling and refrigeration, according to police.
