AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are investigating a North Austin hit-and-run that left one man dead Thursday night. The man died after being hit by a truck while crossing the eastbound frontage road of U.S. Highway 183 at Georgian Drive at 9:50 p.m.

Austin-Travis County EMS said the pedestrian died at the scene. However, the driver took off, and APD Vehicular Homicide detectives are now investigating.

Police said 51-year-old Jeffrey Harmon was not in a crosswalk as he ran across the roadway. He tripped and fell before being hit by a tan Ford F-250, according to Austin police.

This was Austin’s 50th deadly traffic crash and the 56th death of 2014. At this time in 2013, there were 65 deadly crashes and 68 deaths.
