One man killed, another injured in Oltorf shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person was killed and another hurt two others at a Southeast Austin apartment early Thursday morning, launching a homicide investigation. At 12:45 a.m., Austin police officers responding to a call about shots fired at the City View apartments at 4900 East Oltorf St. found two men hurt.

One man, later identified as 25-year-old Jose Dejesus Chavez, died at the scene from a gunshot wound. The other was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge and is expected to recover.

Police are still looking for a suspect and say they don’t believe the victims knew the attacker.

“I do not feel at this time that any members of the public or residents of this complex should feel threatened or believe that the suspect may come back,” said APD Senior Officer Marcus Davis. “We don’t have any suspect information at this time. However, the scene is secure.”

Residents said they had no idea what was happening until they walked out and saw crime scene tape. One neighbor, Jade Kellar, said one of his first questions to police was if he should be concerned.

“He told me don’t worry about it pretty much, so I’m not worried about it I guess,” said Kellar after he asked an APD officer what was going on while walking his dog.

Other neighbors said they’re going to keep an eye out.

“I’m glad to have a concealed carry, I carry my firearm with me and if anything it just kind of makes me want to get to the range,” said Juliana Stark who has lived there less than a year.

Detectives said investigators interviewed at least one witness still at the complex.  They said they believe they have leads.
