The woman, who was identified by the family as 83-year-old Georgia Esquivel, was at the school for a special Austin ISD veteran diploma ceremony. Police tell KXAN she was hit walking in the parking lot.

“We’re very fortunate that school was not in session today and young people weren’t out there to witness this,” said Austin Police Cpl. David Boyd. “Anytime anyone loses their life it’ll be tragic, especially going to a Veterans Day celebration like this.”

Police say the driver stopped and stayed on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Family members tell KXAN News Esquivel was there to honor her uncle, who was getting a belated diploma.
