San Marcos cracks down people stealing water from hydrants

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — City officials are asking people in San Marcos to help report water theft from the city’s fire hydrants. Specifically, they say to watch for commercial vehicles drawing water directly from hydrants without a temporary water meter installed.

Taking water directly from the hydrant without using a city meter is considered theft and endangers the water supply.

Temporary water meters accurately gauge water use for billing purposes. Those wishing to rent a water meter should visit the City of San Marcos Water/Wastewater Utility office.

To report a suspected theft of city water, call the City of San Marcos Water/Wastewater Utility at 512-393-8010. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
