AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are investigating what could be the city’s third homicide in as many days. According to police, officers responded to shots fired in the 6100 block of Devonshire Drive around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
When officers arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound outside one of the units at the Westheimer Oaks Apartments at 2606 Wheless Lane, which is near the initial 911 call location. Police said the victim, later identified as 40-year-old Kimberly Milton Brown, died at the scene.
“This is not common for us to have three homicides in a row like this,” said Det. Craig Smith with APD.
Police believe this shooting was an isolated incident and that the public is not in danger. This is still an ongoing investigation, and police say no arrest has been made in the woman’s death. They are still searching for a suspect.
“My lease is up in December, I’m moving, I can’t do it no more,” said Kendra Smith, who lives in the complex. “It’s too much and the safety of my kids is very important to me.”
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call TIPS hotline at 512-472-TIPS.
Meanwhile, police say they responded to more than one altercation Tuesday night on Wheless Lane. One of those incidents resulted in the Wednesday morning arrest of Terrance Jackson, 44, on charges of aggravated assault. It is unclear if Jackson’s arrest is related to the deadly shooting at this time. Police continue to investigate.
