‘Father of Texas’ celebrated with birthday bash

Austin (KXAN) – He’s the man Austin is named after and is revered as the ‘Father of Texas.’ Stephen F. Austin got a special birthday celebration on Sunday.

A crowd gathered at the state Capitol to celebrate the man who he brought hundreds of colonizers to Texas when it was still a part of Mexico.

Austin was born in 1793. In 1836, he helped lead the Texas revolution. After the state declared independence, he lost out to Sam Houston to be first president of the new Republic. Two days after Christmas that year he died.

In 1910, his body was moved to the Texas State Cemetery in east Austin.
