AUSTIN (KXAN) – After two years of work, the new Southern Walnut Creek Hike and Bike Trail opened in East Austin Saturday. The 7.3 mile trail runs from Govalle Park to Johnny Morris Road.

The first Austin BikeFest also was part of the grand opening festivities. The family-friendly event included a bike raffle, Halloween costume contest and a bike parade along the new path.

Cyclists are excited for the added features offered by Austin’s newest urban trail.

“All concrete level, you don’t have to worry about pot holes or divots, or falling,” Greg Olson said. “Yeah, its great. It’s basically a road for bicycles. Yeah, I love it.”

Funding for the Southern Walnut Creek Hike and Bike Trail came from federal and state grants totaling more than $10 million. It consists of a 10-foot-wide- concrete path with 2-foot-wide shoulders. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
