BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – A man is dead after he was struck by a van while walking along U.S. 290 near McDade Friday evening, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Troopers say the driver of that van did not report the crash until Saturday morning.
Trooper Robbie Barrera says a 66-year-old man from McDade called 911 Saturday morning to report that he struck an object while driving on U.S. 290 at about 7:40 p.m. Friday. The driver later told authorities he was not sure what he hit, and said he stopped after the crash, but did not see the victim.
When paramedics arrived Saturday, they found the body of Sterling Carlson, 36, lying in the grass along the highway. A judge pronounced Carlson dead at 12:40 p.m.
Troopers are still investigating to see if charges should be filed against the driver. Authorities say he could face charges for failing to stop and render aid and not calling within a time frame required by law. KXAN will update this story as more information becomes available.
