BUCHANAN, Texas (KXAN) — Prosecutors in the Hill Country say a former volunteer at a fire department stole tens of thousands of dollars from the nonprofit. Pamela McCormick, a former treasurer, is accused of embezzling the money from the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department.
Court records state McCormick was indicted on charges with theft of property valuing between $20,000 and $100,000. Deputies arrested her on Aug. 8, but she posted bond. Another indictment was filed in September on charges of misapplication of fiduciary property valuing between $1,500 and $20,000. The Llano County Sheriff’s Office said she turned herself in on Sept. 17 and posted bond.
“I feel like it’s important to donate to the firefighters, because what are we going to do without them,” said Audra Parks, who comes from a family of volunteer firefighters and works at a restaurant in town. “Everyone was just really surprised that she was doing it. I was really surprised.”
Court records state McCormick started to take money around May 27, 2009.
KXAN reached out to McCormick, but she was not home. KXAN also tried to reach out to firefighters with the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department, but since they are volunteers, many hold other jobs.
