AUSTIN (KXAN) — A hazardous materials team has closed portions of eastbound SH 71 in front of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport due to a vehicle fire.
The fire initially shut down access to the airport for drivers heading east. Austin police said one lane was opened shortly before 2 p.m. allowing drivers to exit at the airport. They added that progress was being made to reopen the roadway, but to expect delays in the area.
Authorities said drivers trying to get to the airport could also take US 183 south to Burleson Road and head east to avoid the area. Then drive north on FM 973 back to SH 71 and head west to Presidential Boulevard.
The roadway fully reopened about 4 p.m.
