AUSTIN (KXAN) — A teenager was sentenced to 50 years for stabbing his mother to death inside a Northeast Austin home last year.
Raul Rodriguez-Cortez, 18, was arrested after police found 35-year-old Maribel Cortez on April 25, 2013, with several stab wounds. First responders tried to save her, but she died at the scene.
Police found her son later that day in Blanco County. He was driving her truck and also had his mother’s purse and wallet with him, according to an arrest affidavit.
After the stabbing, police said Rodriguez-Cortez told his younger sister he had gotten into an argument with their mother which caused her to have a heart attack and die. After Rodriguez-Cortez left, the girl walked into his room and found her mother with a knife in her chest, the document said.
The arrest report also said the teen had “extensive mental and emotional illnesses, and has made threats to harm himself and wanting to die.” He had also previously threatened to hurt others, investigators learned from Maribel Cortez’s sister.
