Cleft palate surgery a success for girl in Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) – We got our first look Wednesday at a toddler recovering from the first of a series of surgeries here in Austin.

Baby Angelica just had her first surgery at Dell Children’s Medical Center to fix a cleft palate. Her surgeon said that while Angelica will need more procedures to fix her face, this first surgery was a success.

“She’s doing very, very well. No complications,” said Dr. Raymond Harshbarger. “I’m very pleased with how the cleft work came together…she’s healing beautifully and is back to her old self again.”

Austin Smiles made the procedure possible. Back in June, the nonprofit met Angelica on a medical mission trip to her home country of El Salvador. The Austin volunteers realized she needed help that her surgeon couldn’t provide and arranged for Angelica to come to the US. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
