Caldwell County hazardous chemical spill evacuates school

CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Gospel Lighthouse Christian Academy was evacuated after a tractor-trailer carrying hazardous chemicals overturned in Caldwell County near U.S. Highway 183. Emergency Management Coordinator Martin Ritchey says they are also evacuating areas nearby.

School spokeswoman Mary Alvarez says there are 49 students in grades Pre-K through 12. The Red Cross was called in to set up an emergency shelter for teachers and students. at the American Legion Hall. As of 2 p.m., all of the students had been picked up by their parents.

Meanwhile, U.S. 183 south of Lockhart, near Old Luling Road, is closed.

The Caldwell County Office of Emergency Management tells KXAN 3600 gallons of Sodium hydroxide spilled.
