South Texas man sentenced in teen’s death

Gavel - KXAN File

WESLACO, Texas (AP) — A South Texas man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally striking a teenage girl with his car while he was high. A judge delivered the punishment to Lucio Rodriguez on Thursday. He killed 17-year-old Maria Lopez while she was checking the mail at her Weslaco home in May 2013.

Authorities say he was driving at a high speed and was high on marijuana and Xanax. He had a drunken driving charge from 2010 pending at the time of the collision. His attorney called the death an accident and had asked for probation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
