AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police are looking for the person who stabbed and killed a 19-year-old man in South Austin Monday night. Austin police say a 19-year-old man died at a South Austin apartment complex after someone stabbed him Monday night.
Police said Austin-Travis County EMS crews tried to save Joe Montemayor’s life, but he died at the Travis Park Apartments just after 10 p.m. The apartments are located at 1100 E. Oltorf St., across the road from William B. Travis High School.
“I came down the stairs over there, I stopped and looked at him to see what was going on from a distance,” said Terry Renfro, a neighbor who saw Montemayor walking then collapse on the sidewalk. “I looked to see if he tripped or what have you and that didn’t look to be the case.”
Renfro ran back to his apartment to call 911 and that’s when a dispatcher told him to check on the victim again.
“I didn’t notice it at first I thought it was print on his t-shirt with markings and writings, but then I looked closer and told him, ‘no he’s bleeding profusely,'” said Renfro. He also grabbed a towel and put pressure on what he said was a stab would on Montemayor’s left side.
Paramedics arrived and worked on the 19-year-old who later died at the scene.
Investigators say they don’t have a suspect and are asking people to come forward with any kind of information.
