One dead after car crashes into Lady Bird Lake

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Police say a man is dead after a car went off the road and into Lady Bird Lake early Sunday morning.

Rescue crews were called to the lake at 10 North Interstate 35 Service Road southbound at 12:50 a.m. Sunday after witnesses reported a vehicle drove off Festival Beach and into the water, under the I-35 bridge. A dive team searched for several hours to locate the fully submerged vehicle.

When crews removed the car from the water, they found the male victim inside. Austin-Travis County EMS reports the lake is about 15 feet deep in the area where the car entered. However, firefighters say the Colorado River moves so swiftly that the car could have moved down stream into a deeper area of the lake.

APD vehicular homicide detectives continue their investigation.
