Man arrested at ABIA after gun found in carry-on

David Patnode

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Addendum to story below.

A Georgetown man was arrested Tuesday at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport after TSA agents found a semi-automatic handgun and two magazines inside his carry-on bag, according to the arrest affidavit. David Bryce Patnode, 36, was charged with bringing a weapon into a prohibited place.

Patnode told police he had been hunting a couple of weeks ago and forgot the gun was still in the backpack.

He could face up to 10 years in prison, if convicted.

Last week, someone tried to take a compound bow and a samurai sword through security at ABIA. You can bring those weapons on a plane in checked baggage, but not as a carry-on.

Editor’s Note: In April 2015, the prosecutor agreed to drop the charges as long as Patnode agreed to completing a firearms safety course and agree to not apply for a CHL anytime during the next 12 months. Patnode also had to pay a TSA fine as well. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
