Police charge San Antonio man in shooting of kids

Prisoner, prison, jail

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio police say a man who shot a 6-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl has been arrested after a three-day search. Joe Ramos Mercado, 39, was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Police say he shot the siblings on Saturday while they were in a car with their mother. They say Mercado and the woman were in a relationship and had been arguing.

Mercado told reporters Tuesday that he was trying to shoot the car, not the children. Both children remain hospitalized. Their conditions are unknown but authorities say they are expected to survive. The mother was uninjured.

Mercado is being held in the Bexar County Jail on $210,000 bond. Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney.
