AUSTIN (KXAN) — This year’s City of Austin elections comes with a big change. For the first time, voters will elect a council member that represents their own district and a mayor. This change is part of the 10-one plan voters approved two years ago. After November’s election the City of Austin will have 10 council members and one mayor.  In the past it was a citywide election.

This year there are 78 candidates for city council and eight people running for mayor.  To help you meet the candidates, KXAN, KUT, the Austin Monitor, the Austin Chronicle, and Univision 62 will host several candidate forums.  Click here for a list and to sign up for the free candidate forums. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
