Brothers booked on theft charge

brothers accused of theft

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Two brothers who got the attention of police by knocking on doors late at night in South Austin are now in jail.

Police charged James and John Burkey with theft. Investigators say the crime happened on August 23rd at the Home Depot at Slaughter Lane and I-35.

A few days before that officers questioned the Burkey brothers after getting complaints that they were going around South Austin neighborhoods late at night – knocking on doors and asking for money. Which police say, isn’t illegal.

So, when they were called to Home Depot and realized the theft suspects’ description matched that of the door-knocking brothers they knew where to start. Austin Police say employees were able to identify the brothers in a photo lineup.

They were subsequently arrested and booked. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
