MANOR, Texas (KXAN) — Employees of a gourmet nut company were ordered out of the store Thursday after a suspicious package came in a package of nuts, according to Austin Fire Department spokeswoman Michelle Tanzola. The hazardous materials team was called to the wholesale location on 12911 Beltex Drive in Manor at 9:45 a.m., after employees discovered the package didn’t have any identification on it.

AustiNuts received a 50-pound bag of nuts with a 2-inch-by-2-inch baggie of gray powder in it, which is out of the ordinary. The building was evacuated at 10 a.m. while fire officials investigated.

HazMat tests came back negative, except for an elevated protein level. Officials did not clarify what that means in this case.

They’re still determining what the substance is, but as of 11:26 a.m., they are wrapping up their investigation. It does not appear to be a dangerous situation. Meanwhile, employees are being let back into the building — after standing outside while the HazMat crew looked into the substance.

Still, officials have kept the area where the bag was found blocked off as they continue to look into the substance. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
